Breaking- Centre appoints Gujarat IPS officer Rakesh Asthana as the new Delhi CP

New Delhi, July 27

The Centre appointed senior IPS officer of Gujarat cadre Rakesh Asthana as the new Delhi Police Commissioner.

This is for the first time that a non AGMUT cadre IPS officer has been appointed as the Delhi Police Commissioner. Delhi Police comes under the AGMUT cadre of the Indian Police Services.

The 1984 batch IPS officer Rakesh Asthana is presently the Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) and also hold the additional charge of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

In an order dated July 27, the MHA appointed Rakesh Asthana as the Delhi Police Commissioner reliving him of his charge from BSF.

As the Chief of BSF and NCB, Asthana was instrumental in key crackdown of narcotics and drug seizures in high seas and border areas.

DG Asthana's name was among the top contenders for the post of CBI Chief alongwith former NIA Chief YC Modi. However, some members of selection panel had reservations which led to the appointment of Maharashtra former DGP, Subodh Jaiswal's appointment as the CBI Chief.

The appointment has taken many by surprise and the social media is a buzz with reactions to the appointment. Meanwhile, IPS Balaji Shrivastav who was appointed as Delhi CP on June 30, will now head only the vigilance department.

Meanwhile, Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Chief SS Deswal will hold the additional charge of BSF following DG Asthana's taking over as Delhi CP.
