Delhi Police busts fake call centre operating near a hospital in Janakpuri, 16 held

New Delhi, March 12
The Delhi Police uncovered a fake call centre scam last week where the accused targeted job-seekers by posing as HR representatives from reputed banks and companies, adding that 18 people were arrested in connection with the fraud.
The police identified the accused as Gaurav Dargan and Piyush Malhotra from Janakpuri. The accused disclosed that a fake call centre was operating near Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri.
The police stated that the gang cheated victims by posing as HR managers or recruiters from legitimate online job portals. They fraudulently promised job opportunities in exchange for payment of registration fees and course charges, ultimately taking money without providing any actual employment.
As per the case details, a complaint was lodged on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. The complainant said he had been searching for a job online and had uploaded his resume on various job portals. On January 25, he said, he received a call from a person claiming to be a representative of a reputed bank. The caller instructed him to take an online test. When he failed to complete it, he said, he was directed to visit a website to take an online course. A mobile number was also provided for further communication, he added.
The complainant later received another call from the number, where details about the ‘online course’ were explained. The caller allegedly convinced him that it was a genuine job opportunity. However, it turned out to be a scam in which the accused extracted money under the pretence of course or training fees and obtained the complainant’s bank details.
Based on this complaint, an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 318(4) and 3(5) on charges of cheating and joint criminal liability was registered on March 7, and an investigation was initiated, the police said.
The police team analysed call detail records, checked IMEI numbers, and examined email IDs linked to the suspected beneficiary account, police added.
