Delhi Police Commissioner hailed community policing as key aspect of security

New Delhi, August 18

Delhi CP Rakesh Asthana today inaugurated a community policing programme “Ummeed” in the north east district of Delhi in his first public programme, highlighting a key priority area of policing in the city.

The programme “Ummeed: A step together towards a better tomorrow- A Day with Team North East” was organized by north-east district police at Shyam Lal College, Delhi on communal harmony and peace, highlighting the achievements of a community-based organization “Nagrik Bhaichara Samiti (NBS)” of North East District Police.

Speaking on the occasion, the CP Delhi Asthana said that although Police is trained to tackle all sorts of law & order and other issues, yet it cannot achieve effectiveness without support from society. “Being an important link in information regarding criminal activities, arrest of criminals or management of law and order issues, public cooperation is the sine qua non,” he said.

Since it is not feasible to deploy police persons in every nook and corner, a self-disciplined and service-oriented society is required to assist the police to establish peace and harmony. “Crime has no religion and only a few anti-social elements spoil the social environment. Such unscrupulous elements need to be identified and dealt with as per law”, the CP Delhi observed.

Highlighting the need for harmony, Asthana stated, “We live in an age of technology and economic progress can be attained only in a peaceful environment. We should all strive to live together in harmony.” Hailing ‘Ummeed’ as an initiative to strengthen common cord of togetherness and mutual trust between communities in order to live peacefully in the spirit of coexistence, Shri Asthana pointed out that there was no place for violence in society as India was known for unity in diversity. The CP Delhi also assured full cooperation from police in establishing such community initiatives and in organizing social programmes that strengthen unity and integrity of the nation.

Rakesh Asthana also unveiled the “Nagrik Bhaichara Samiti” booklet while video clips highlighting the work done by the committee were shown to public.

The programme further saw the institution of “Ratan Lal Medal of Hope” to commemorate the martyr Head Constable (Late) Ratan Lal who lost his life while performing duties during the riots last year. It seeks to instill values of peace and togetherness in our future generation by awarding of medals to students who took part in essay and drawing competitions on the theme of communal harmony held under the banner of NBS. The wife of martyr Ratan Lal was also felicitated by CP Delhi at the event.

The Commissioner of Police also launched a social media campaign containing messages from various celebrities urging people to maintain peace and harmony. The wards of police families of north east district who have performed well in the recent board examinations received felicitations. Police personnel found eligible under “Heroes of the Week”, a scheme of North East District police wherein best performing police personnel for the week are chosen and recognised, were also awarded.

The police personnel who were injured in the recent encounter at Khajuri-Khas were also rewarded by CP Delhi. The Commissioner of Police also awarded “Asadharan Karya Purashkar( AKP)” to two police personnel of north east district.
