Delhi Police to put up over 900 CCTV cameras as security measure for I Day

New Delhi, July 12

Ahead of the Independence Day, Delhi Police will install over 925 CCTV cameras to be installed across the city to beef up security.

The decision was taken at the backdrop of the previous incidents of communal tensions and protests in different parts of the city. The police was to ensure the law and order is intact.

The Delhi Police has also invited dealers and distributors to install CCTVs and oversee arrangements.

The officials said large number of CCTV cameras would be installed in North and Central Delhi where the Independence Day parade is held. Most of the lanes will be barricaded to ensure smooth traffic movement for parade guests and the safety of locals.

According to the police, 4-megapixel and 2-megapixel high-definition cameras are being procured. Some of the devices will be pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras to ensure maximum areas are covered for high security.

Keeping in mind the parade near Red Fort, more than 64 CCTVs will be procured only for the monument. The cameras will be used for six to 23 days based on location and requirements.

The cameras will be installed in the New Delhi district, North district, Central district, Northwest district, and Southeast district.

Around eight to 10 cameras will be provided to the security unit which will be deployed for the security of chief guests and ministers, officials added.

The Delhi Police have also sought additional forces from CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) to be deployed across the city. The police have intensified patrolling and security cover due to the recent communal clashes in the area.

The communal tensions began in Jahangirpuri in April where at least seven police personnel and locals were injured during stone-pelting and firing on the day of Hanuman Jayanti. Prior to that tensions had erupted on the day of Ramnavmi too in some pockets of the city.

This was followed by protests at many parts of the city opposing BJP leader Nupur Sharma's statements on Prophet Mohmmad. The protest at Jama Masjid in the May had turned serious and over 1500 persons had gathered disturbing law and order in the area.
Last year, farmers and people protesting against the farm laws broke into the Red Fort and vandalised the place. The protesters had also climbed atop the monument and hoisted a religious flag.
