IPS officer Sanjay Arora- the new Chief of Delhi Police is an upright and focused officer leading police as team

New Delhi, July 31

Senior IPS officer Sanjay Arora will lead the Delhi Police as the new Police Commissioner of the national capital. 

Sanjay Arora is serving as DG Into Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP). 

Arora was appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner by Minister of Home Affairs on July 31 while senior officer Rakesh Asthana's one year extension period ended. Asthana was given an year's extension and appointed as Delhi CP in July 2021.

Known as a no nonsense, honest and uncomplicated officer, Sanjay Arora has to his credit the arrest operation of the sandalwood dacoit Veerappan. Arora was leading the team of Tamil Nadu who had conducted joint operations leading the arrest of Veerappan.

His colleagues and juniors in Tamil Nadu Police known him as an officer of few words and more work.

An Indian Police Service officer of 1988 batch, Tamil Nadu cadre, Arora is a graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Malviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur (Rajasthan).

After joining the IPS, he served in various capacities in Tamil Nadu Police. He was Superintendent of Police (SP), Special Task Force, where he achieved significant success against the Veerappan gang, for which he was awarded CM’s Gallantry Medal for Bravery and Heroic Action.

In 1991, Arora, after being trained by NSG, had a pivotal role in forming the Special Security Group (SSG) to provide security to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu during the heydays of LTTE activity. He also served as the Superintendent of Police of various districts of TN.

He has had the privilege of serving in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on deputation as Commandant from 1997 to 2002. He had commanded a border guarding ITBP Battalion in Matli, Uttarakhand from 1997 to 2000. As an instructor, he had made remarkable contributions in the field of training, serving as Commandant (Combat Wing) at the ITBP Academy, Mussoorie from 2000 to 2002.

He served as Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city from 2002 to 2004. He has also served as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Villupuram range and Deputy Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.

He has led the Chennai City Police as – Additional Commissioner – Crime & Headquarters and Additional Commissioner – Traffic. On promotion, he was appointed as ADGP (Operations) and ADGP (Administration) in Tamil Nadu Police.

He has served as IG (Special Operations) BSF, IG Chhattisgarh Sector CRPF and IG Operations CRPF. He has served as ADG HQ & Ops CRPF and Spl DG J&K Zone CRPF before being appointed as DG, ITBP.
He assumed the charge of DG ITBP on 31 August, 2021 as the 31st Chief of the Force.

He has been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2004, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2014, Police Special Duty Medal , Antrik Suraksha Padak and UN Peacekeeping Medal among others.

A senior officer from Tamil Nadu cadre said, "Sanjay Arora is a leader and team boosting officer who believes is goal oriented and sharp in his investigations. His appointment in Delhi will further shape the professional policing in Delhi Police like it did during his tenure in Chennai and Coimbatore".

Sanjay Arora is the third officer from outside the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre brought in to head the national capital's police force, according to news agency PTI. Rakesh Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer, was appointed in July 2021, while Ajay Raj Sharma, a 1966-batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IPS officer, had got the post in 1999.
