National Commission for Women took suo Motu cognisance of the self immolation outside Supreme Court

New Delhi, August 17

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo Motu cognisance of the self immolation outside Supreme Court and issued notice to Uttar Pradesh Police. 

The notice stated Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to DGP UP seeking detailed action taking report in this matter. The Commission has also sought explaination on details of safety and security provided to the victim. 

The NCW has also asked for taking action against erring officers for dereliction of duty. 

Chairperson Sharma has also written to Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthaana to conduct a separate inquiry into the matter. In addition to that, she has also instructed for necessary medial aide and help to the victim and her brother admitted at RML hospital for treatment.

Thr Commission added that the victim set herself ablaze outside the Supreme Court after UP Police issued non bailable warrant against her. She was harassed and threatened by the accused. 

The NCW has sought quick action taken reports form UP and Delhi Police. 

The victim who had alleged rape against BSP MP Atul Rai had set herself on fire alongwith her brother outside Supreme Court on August 16.
