Senior citizen set himself ablaze in Ludhiana following alleged harassment from daughter-in-law

New Delhi, August 25

A senior citizen in Ludhiana allegedly set himself ablaze after he was threatened and harassed by his daughter-in-law. 

The 60-year-old man took the drastic step at his house in Guru Gobind Singh Nagar at Noorwala Road. The man's daughter-in-law and her parents had been harassing the elderly man and had threatened to implicate him in a dowry harassment case. 

The victim’s wife told police said that he ended his life as he was humiliated and thrashed by their son's in-laws on August 21. She added that the accused also threatened to lodge a fake dowry harassment case against them. 

Upset over the incident, the man returned to his house and poured kerosene on himself. The man then set himself ablaze. He was rushed to a hospital but he breathed his last during treatment. 

The deceased's wife said that her son got married around one-and-a-half years ago and has a six-month-old daughter.

According to the police, the deceased's wife told the police that the daughter-in-law wanted to move in a separate accommodation, but when the victim refused, she had allegedly assaulted him. She had started harassed her mother-in-law also after marriage. 

The police have booked the accused under sections 306 (suicide) and 34 ( acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
