The Uttar Pradesh government appointed Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Prashant Kumar as the new acting director general of police (DGP) (law and order).
The incumbent DGP Vijay Kumar retired on January 31.
Prashant Kumar has become the fourth acting DGP of UP Police. Prior to him Vijay Kumar was appointed as acting DGP after RK Vishwakarma was appointed as DGP for a month on retirement of DS Chauhan. Chauhan was appointed as acting DGP after government has transferred out seniormost IPS officer of UP Police, Mukul Goel from the post of the DGP.
In 2020, Prashant Kumar was appointed the Additional DG (Law and Order), and following his promotion, he assumed the position of DG in the same domain in January this year.
Kumar has won this year’s President’s Medal for Gallantry on Republic Day for his role in apprehending four people linked to the kidnapping of a doctor from a prominent hospital in Delhi back in 2017. The gallantry award was conferred alongside Deputy Inspector General of Police Manzil Saini.
