Clashes erupted in few districts of Maharashtra during the protests against violence on Muslims in Tripura

New Delhi, November 13

The districts of Nashik, Amravati, Nanded, Malegaon in Maharashtra witnessed riots leading to stone pelting and violence during the protests against recent violence in Tripura.

Two policemen were injured in the stone pelting and mob violence.

In Nanded, stones were pelted at police vans and two police personnel sustained injuries at Deglur Naka and Shivaji Nagar.

The protestors allegedly torched shops and police vehicles in Malegaon and Amravati, following which the riot squad was called in to quell the protests.

In Malegaon protestors had gathered to protest against the treatment of the community in Tripura, where on October 26, a mosque, few houses and shops were reportedly vandalised by members of the right-wing group, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, during a rally.

In Amravati, over 8,000 people gathered outside the district collector’s office to submit a memorandum demanding that atrocities against the minority community should be stopped. When people were leaving after submitting the memorandum, stone-pelting took place at three places between Chitra Chowk and Cotton Market.

In Amravati’s Kotwali police station, the police lodged FIR as the police had not given permission to the protest rally.

However, the protests that took place in other parts of the state, including Hingoli and Bhiwandi stayed peaceful.

The police said in several districts the religious and political outfits had sought permission for a peaceful bandh on November 12 following which memorandums were to be submitted to the district collectors of the various districts.

The call was supported by the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Samajwadi Party.

However, in few district the protests turned violent leading to serious law and order disturbance.

The Maharashtra Home Department however stated that law and order in all the districts was brought under control within few hours and police in respective districts are probing the incident.
