Delhi Police arrested an engineering student for duping citizens in name of providing icu set ups and oxygen

New Delhi, May 13

The Delhi Police North District arrested an engineering student for duping citizens in name of providing icu set ups and oxygen cylinders to Covid patients. 47 persons have been duped by him so far. 

The police identified the accused as Aryan Singh alias Dhananjay from Sector- 77, Noida UP. He is pursuing B Tech from a renowned institute in Noida. 

DCP (North) Anto Alphonse stated that Aryan cheated victims through Instagram stories who were in need of oxygen beds and oxygen cylinders. He got the idea of duping victims when he himself posted for help on Instagram and got huge responses. He contacted victims posing as a caller from a reputed company. 

The police said that a call was received on Covid Helpline, wherein complainant alleged that his relative was suffering from corona. He received a message on a whatsApp group for setting up ICU facility at home. Subsequently, he contacted the given mobile number xxxxxxxx37 where receiver introduced himself as Dhananjay and directed him to deposit Rs 3,950/- as advance rent for setting up ICU facility at home. 

Following this inducement, complainant transferred Rs 3,950/- on an online Wallet A/c on April 30 and since then, the alleged person was not responding to complainant’s phone. The police registered a cse of cheating against him at Wazirabad police station. 

The Cyber Crime Cell, North District took up the investigation. The cyber cops  conducted technical analysis of alleged mobile number xxxxxxxx37 and online transactions. As per technical investigation, the location of the accused was traced in Jammu. 

As per previous transactions of the alleged, it was also found that accused used to stay in luxurious hotel and location of the accused was next to Radisson Hotel in Jammu. Immediately, a team of cyber cell rushed to Jammu, where it was found that suspect has checked out from the hotel and was later on apprehended near Pathankot after a long chase. The suspect was identified as Aryan and brought to Delhi. The mobile phones used in the offence for contacting victims and mobile phone used for online wallet account recovered. 

During interrogation it was revealed that he posted a story on Instagram for enquiry about oxygen cylinder and seeing the response of large number of people for his enquiry, he came up with an idea of duping people in name of setting up ICU at home.

He further disclosed that his number was spread on Whatsapp through several groups and he was contacted by relatives of corona patients, who were looking for ICU bed in Hospital. 

The officials added that Aryan, with his good communication skills, explained entire process to victims and provided online Wallet account and UPI ID to victims for transfer of money. He also used name of a well-known Foundation to gain trust of the victim and requested victims to visit the website for verification. 

He  used his own online wallet Account and later on started using online wallet accounts of his known. He believed that by losing small amount of money, the victims would not approach police. He was spending money on lavish lifestyle and stayed in five star hotels at Greater Noida, Gurugram and Jammu.

The police recovered two mobile phones used in commission of crime.
