Delhi Police to procure bikes & gadgets for Women squads

Constable Susheela Meena is very enthusiastic about her new role. She is one of the precursors of the all-women bike patrolling squads. She, along with her female colleagues, succeeded in instilling a feeling of security among women studying and working in the north campus area of Delhi University.

Delhi Police is all set to introduce all women bike patrolling squads in different parts of the national capital. Constable Susheela Meena, constable Manju, head constable Chanda Sagar, head constable Seema and constable Uma are the first among these bikers. All of them are posted with the Maurice Nagar police station. Their jurisdiction territory is Delhi University and its surrounding areas. While these five cops are trained drivers and some of women staff at this police station are learning driving skills from them.

These cops start the day with their Apache and Pulsar ride with LED flashers, windscreens and Batons in their area. Lots of girls walk in the north campus heading towards their colleges. They get reassured with the visibility of women cops. What they could not tell male cops, they would brief policewomen. Rashi Malhotra, a DU student, speaks with BW Police World about it. Rashi told that she along with her friends would walk every morning from Vishvavidyalaya metro station and many times they had to face unsolicited comments from strangers, which they usually preferred to ignore. Now, the situation is changed. Policewomen station daily in the morning near the metro station and in their presence, female students feel safe and anti-social elements are nowhere. These women cops are trained and equipped with .9 MM pistols.

Effects of all-women squads are being observed. One fine morning, constable Susheela and a woman cop pillion rider were patrolling in the university area. All of a sudden, both of them saw a biker snatched a mobile phone from a girl student, who was going towards her college. Without wasting any time, women constables chased and overpowered the snatcher. They even called a Quick Reaction Team van for taking the girl, as well as the accused to Maurice Nagar police station. However, the girl refused to file the complaint. But, this incident left a message for the snatchers.

Another incident happened near State Bank of India in the university area. Two bikers were trying to snatch the bag from an elderly woman. Women cops observed it and chased bikers. On seeing women bikers, bikers fled away leaving the bag on the spot. Some other incidents had also got prevented only because of these women bikers. Constable Susheela told BW Police World that the presence of them serves two important purposes. The even sight of these women cops instils confidence among girls and it creates fear among eve-teasers. Head constable Chanda Saagar told BW Police World that girls feel protected in finding us around them. These cops exchanged phone numbers with many girls.

Apart from colleges on the north campus, there are many girl hostels too. The area around Meghdoot, Miranda House hostel, Daulat Ram college hostel, Khalsa college hostel, Saint Stephen’s college hostel, PG Women hostel, Hindu College hostel, Ramjas college hostel, SRCC hostel and Social Works women hostel are such hostels where these all-women cop squads are focusing. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi), Jatin Narwal told BW Police World that these women cop is doing their duties very effectively.

Special Commissioner of Delhi Police, Dipendra Pathak said that these women cops will act as the first responder to a crime-scene and they will be present in the areas frequented by women. Delhi Police are planning to purchase more bikes for these squads. Most of the squads will be formed in the coming days. Delhi Police would purchase more bikes and other gadgets for these squads in the coming days.
