New Delhi, July 12

The Telangana police appointed Dr. Jitender as the new Director General of Police of Telangana.

Jitender becomes the first DGP to be appointed by the government since the Congress came to power in Telangana in December last year.

An IPS officer of  a 1992 batch, Dr. Jitender, who was earlier posted as principal secretary in the Home Department, has served in the Left-wing extremist-dominated areas as well as in the Greyhounds, the specialised anti-Naxalite force. He had also served in Central Bureau of Investigation.

Hailing from Punjab, Jitender began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Nirmal. He served as Additional SP in Bellampally and SP of Mahbubnagar and Guntur districts when the Maoist activity was at its peak. The IPS officer also worked for the elite anti-Maoist force Greyhounds and also the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Soon after his appointment, Jitender called on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and later took charge as the police chief.

The present DGP Ravi Gupta is transferred and posted as Special Chief Secretary to Government, Home Department.

IPS Ravi Gupta was appointed interim DGP in December last year, after the election commission suspended former Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar for violating the Model Code of Conduct which was then in place.

Kumar, formerly the Hyderabad commissioner of police, was appointed DGP in December in a major reshuffle by the outgoing Telangana government of the BRS.
