With deteriorating air-quality, pollution is taking its toll on Delhi traffic cops. They spend long hours on polluted roads. However, sometimes they have been provided with the masks, but it does not remain usable more than a day. This is why Delhi Police arrange their health check-up, occasionally.
A preventive health check-up camp was organized at Traffic Police Headquarters, Todapur for the benefit of Delhi Traffic Personnel. Joint Commissioner of traffic police, Garima Bhatnagar told BW Police World that keeping in view the facts that they are exposed to harsh weather conditions and the disadvantages accompanied with them such as dust, pollution, heat, cold waves, etc. which can have an adverse effect on their health.The health check-up camp was formally inaugurated by Dependra Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic. A targeted 1500 personnel underwent various diagnostic tests in three days. On 4th December, 516 traffic police personnel took benefit of the health check-up camp. A team of Doctors and support staff from BLK Super Specialty Hospital, Rajendra Place, Park Hospital, Keshav Puram and CSIR- IGIB conducted the diagnostic tests to check blood pressure, diabetes, ECG, Hemoglobin, Pulmonary function test, Bone Density Test, etc. with special emphasis on lung-related diagnostic Test.
Garima Bhatnagar said that as per the observation of doctors, 80 police personnel (15.5%) indulged in repeated throat cleaning and suffered from a cough and breathlessness. They displayed some symptoms of pulmonary stress. Work-related stress was quite evident amongst most of the personnel. About 40% of the personnel had an osteopenic disorder (Lower bone calcium density).
The officers who had hypertension and diabetes accounted for about 15-20 %. They were advised to wear the pollution mask of good quality while performing their duty, do pranayama and breathing exercises and try to cultivate and habit of meditation even for a period of 3 minutes to 5 minutes in a day and eat a healthy low oil diet and avoid similar street food, etc.
