In the run-up to the G20 Summit in September this year, the Delhi Police are implementing the 'Safe City Project's pilot phase by May this year.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena has asked the Delhi Police to implement the ambitious Safe City Project in the city by August.
The Safe City Project runs under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is technology-enabled enhanced policing and better security, especially for women, and will cost around ₹798 crore.
The project aims to use technology and ensure the prompt availability of professionally equipped police personnel to reach women in distress.
A command and control centre will be set up with facilities like video analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, facial recognition system, etc. at police headquarters, district headquarters and police stations.
Various projects under various schemes of Delhi Police would be integrated with the Safe City Project platform. Two mobile command and control vehicles to be deployed.
88 Prakhar Vans equipped with MDT (mobile data terminal), communication devices, body worn cameras, vehicle mounted cameras, GPS, etc.
The Delhi Police will install 10,582 CCTV cameras will be installed in places across Delhi that are frequented by women. This includes, GIS Mapping of CCTV cameras under Safe City Project as well as other schemes of Delhi Police for installation of CCTV cameras, to avoid duplication. Integration of location-based services and crime and criminal databases with CCTV feeds for prompt and effective resolution of women’s safety issues at public places.
Addressing a review meeting at the LG secretariat, Saxena issued instructions to incorporate AI-based applications into the project. “We have to ensure real-time crowd assessment, picking up behavioural traits and discrepancies, and immediately notify the command and control centres at the police headquarters, the offices of the deputy commissioners of police and police stations for immediate response in case of any deviations that point out towards impending crime".
He added, "Survey of field locations identified for installation of field devices, that is, CCTV cameras, poles, junction boxes and gunshot detection has been completed, and works have started on the installation of field devices, that is, poles and laying of cables. Strengthening of a data centre floor is in progress, while the preparation of data centre and C4i (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) at the police headquarters is in progress".
The Delhi Police has already begun a pilot project in six districts whereby the integration of technology and installations of cameras is underway. the project in six districts is expected to be completed by May while the remaining districts would be completed by July end.
