Government appoints former union home secretary Ajay Bhalla as Manipur Governor

Ajay Bhalla was administered the oath by Justice D Krishnakumar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, in the presence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh,

New Delhi, January 4

Former home secretary of India, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, was sworn in as the 19th Governor of Manipur in a formal ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan in Imphal. 

Bhalla was administered the oath by Justice D Krishnakumar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, in the presence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, members of the state cabinet, MLAs of both ruling and Opposition camps, senior government and police officials, and top brass of central security forces.

After taking the oath, the Governor received the Rashtriya Salute and inspected the Guard of Honour, presented by personnel of the Manipur Rifles and the India Reserve Battalion.

Ajay Kumar Bhalla is a retired IAS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre of the 1984 batch. He served as the Union home secretary from August 23, 2019, to August 22, 2024. Bhalla has an extensive career in public administration, having handled key positions, including secretary in the Ministry of Power, and joint secretary in the Ministry of Coal.
